I was assigned to our "Snozzle" Rescue 4 and after doing our "Morning Check" I drove by our UPS Cargo area where a couple of Bus loads of Marines were enplaning onto an American 757. They were milling about so I drove over to chat with them and they had a while before their flight was to leave. So being a former USN Squid I thought I'd give these "Jarhead's" a "Look See" at my weapon of mass application! They were a friendly sort and told me that they had finished a week of training at Camp Roberts about 90 miles south of here. They were from the 14th Marine Regiment, 1st Battalion Bravo 1 Company based out of Joliet Illinois.
So being a former vet myself and showing my Navy charm, I asked if they would like to pose infront of my rig. They all said, whoooyaa! and proceed to grab their M-16's and swarm all over the rig. It was fun for them and they managed to not get hurt (Like Jarheads Do!). They loved the rig and I even took a few of them out to the end of our runway. It's easy to get them excited or maybe I've grown callouse after 20 years at the Airport!
But all in all..I gave them something they can take back home and tell their friends and loved ones about the Oakland Airport ARFF Department and a guy called "Sarge" that was cool to let them have a ride and look over the "Snozzle".
But seriously, I am proud that I live in a country where the youth of our country are willing to lay down their lives for my freedom! Semper fi Marines!
