Matt,
USAF has long and short tours overseas. The short tours are usually 1 year and are unaccompanied (you go alone). The long tours are usually 3 years and you can take your family...but base housing may not always be available so you have to live on the economy. Yes, you get money for this...BUT...it doesn't always cover all the expenses. Maybe some of the guys who are currently active duty can fill you in on short time deployments...but I don't think they exist. With a wfie and 3 kids you might find a real strain on the marriage. As far as Uncle Sam is concerned, he didn't issue you your wife and kids, so the mission always comes first, howevr they do try to make it as painless as they can...just don't expect them to give your family issue top billing.

USAF ARFF is not jst ARFF. You are the base Fd and you could be riding ARFF one day and structural the next. When I was in it was 24/24...now I think its 48/72...but don't quote me. You will do anything that is FD related. As you move up in rank you could go into inspection, or FD supply. Haz-Mat is now also part of their duties. You might want to check out www.dodfire.com (http://www.dodfire.com). Its a web site that belongs to Don Warner, the head of USAF fire protection...good place to find DoD ARFF folks. Keep asking the questions, there are lots of folks out there with answers to help you make the decision.
